Occupational therapy is a health profession, in which the health and the well being of an individual are enhanced by occupations. It focuses on helping the individuals suffering from physical or mental illness or disability, and helps them to the reach the position at which they can function their best. The main impact of this therapy is on our day to day activities. In other words, it can be defined as skilled treatment that helps individuals in their day to day difficulties and disabilities. Thus, this therapy provides the individuals with independence, including the performance of individual in daily activities such as work, play or leisure etc.

Occupational Therapy works in a very different way and has a very high impact. It is applied to the individuals who have some disability, difficulties or development problems, or have emotional or any other kind of imbalance. Occupational Therapy works by making the individual realize his or her imbalances. They help the individual in identifying the imbalance and then a measure is designed in order to balance that imbalance. A little information like family background or a specific interest forms an integral part of the activity used to deal with the imbalance or disability.

The requirement of occupational therapy is increasing day by day. The work includes giving specific skilled treatment for the specific disability or difficulty, giving the details of modification required to get rid of the difficulties, adaptation of various activities in day to day life in order to increase their ability of participating, etc. Along with that it also helps people with adaptations function better in everyday life.



An occupational therapist requires a bachelor's degree at least to start his or her practice. This Bachelor's degree usually takes 4 years to get. To get into some college for the Bachelor's degree, the candidate needs to have passed the 10+2 examination or its equivalent and should have physics, chemistry and biology as his subjects; the therapist may also go for a Master's degree or a doctorate degree.

The occupational therapists are highly in demand in this modern era. The chief areas of demand of occupational therapists are in the fields of conventional medicals and fitness arenas. Today, an occupational therapist works with a patient of almost any disorder whether it is orthopedic, neurological, or psychological. The occupational therapists can even go for the option of polyclinic and can work with some other professionals.

The career option for an occupational therapist is very wide and huge. There are many opportunities for them to work and are they also paid huge amounts as salaries or fees. The requirement of therapists is increasing widely. A few of the places where they can work are schools, where they can help in analyzing the abilities of the students, and at a residence, they can help by solving day to day problems.

Thus, we find occupational therapy a field full of opportunities and a bright career. So it would not be wrong to say that occupational therapy is a career oriented field giving a lot of career prospects and is growing in demand with time.
