JOB SUMMARY: The incumbent serves as an advisor to management on issues of biosafety, chemical, and radiation safety ensuring that operations are conducted in a safe and secure environment; ensures that all employees receive required initial, annual safety training, while working in a laboratory environment. This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for HIV\/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP), Office of the Director (OD), Atlanta, Georgia. DUTIES: As a Safety and Occupational Health Manager you will: Oversee Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2), Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory processes, practices, and procedures and makes recommendations for safety and quality improvement. Monitor procedures and specimen inventories for compliance and adherence to applicable policies and regulations pertaining to high-risk work, including chain-of-custody and export to public health and research laboratories. Conduct a variety of microbiological science and support work that advances the implementation of good laboratory practices (GLP) and laboratory quality management systems, in the operation of the laboratories. Research, assess, investigate, analyze, and evaluate laboratory practices and strategies to provide guidance, consultation and recommendations on improving laboratory safety and quality systems. Develop and present safety training Center wide for laboratory and supervisory personnel, and other interested employees, to improve microbiologic quality laboratory practices, biosafety, and regulatory compliance. Represent the organization and\/or CDC on a variety of committees aimed at the improvement of safety in laboratory operations. CLEARANCE REQUIRED: Q - Nonsensitive REQUIREMENTS: US Citizenship is required. Background Investigation is required. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Specialized Experience Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level of in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in evaluating, monitoring and implementing Biosafety Level 2 and\/or Biosafety Level 3 laboratory practices to provide guidance and recommendations on improving and maintaining safe laboratory operations. Documenting experience: In accordance with Office of Personnel Management policy, federal employees are assumed to have gained experience by performing duties and responsibilities appropriate for their official series and grade level as described in their position description. Experience that would not normally be part of the employee's position is creditable, however, when documented by satisfactory evidence, such as a signed memorandum from the employee's supervisor or an SF-50 or SF-52 documenting an official detail or other official assignment. The documentation must indicate whether the duties were performed full time or, if part time, the percentage of times the other duties were performed. It is expected that this documentation is included in the employee's official personnel record. In order to receive credit for experience in your resume that is not within the official series and grade level of your official position, you must provide a copy of the appropriate documentation of such experience as indicated above.
